Evidence & disclosure
A research-based decision guide using official pricing and documentation, not a hands-on checkout test. No affiliate links.
Evaluate Payhip Free first if you bring your own audience, can use a supported payment processor, and its tax coverage fits your business. Consider Gumroad when its broader merchant-of-record arrangement is worth the higher direct-sale cost. Do not buy a monthly plan before the savings justify it.
For an ebook, template, or printable, the useful question is what happens after someone clicks your link: the fee, tax treatment, file delivery, and money reaching your bank. Neither checkout guarantees customers.
Compare the complete selling fee
| Option | Monthly platform charge | Platform fee per sale | Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad direct links or profile | $0 | 10% + $0.50 | Extra |
| Gumroad Discover | $0 | 30% | Included |
| Payhip Free | $0 | 5% | Extra |
| Payhip Plus | $29 | 2% | Extra |
| Payhip Pro | $99 | 0% | Extra |
Gumroad's detailed fee guide explicitly excludes 2.9% + $0.30 credit-card processing from its standard direct-sale fee; PayPal fees are separate too. Discover's 30% includes processing. These are different acquisition channels, not interchangeable checkout prices. Gumroad also lists an automatic direct-sale discount after $20,000 in monthly paid sales, outside this first-product comparison. Gumroad fees
Payhip's plans include the same features, unlimited products, and unlimited revenue. Paying monthly reduces its transaction percentage rather than unlocking a necessary first-download feature. Your payment processor still charges separately; its rate depends on your provider, country, and transaction. Payhip pricing
What a twenty dollar sale could leave
Here is an illustration, not an earnings forecast. Assume a $20 USD product, no tax, and a Payhip processor charging 2.9% + $0.30. That Payhip rate is an assumption, not a universal quote; Gumroad's card rate is its published figure.
| Channel | Platform fee | Processing | Remainder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gumroad direct card sale | $2.50 | $0.88 | $16.62 |
| Payhip Free card sale | $1.00 | $0.88 | $18.12 |
| Gumroad Discover sale | $6.00 including processing | Included | $14.00 |
The modeled direct-sale difference is $1.50 per order. These amounts exclude sales tax/VAT/GST, tax on service fees, refunds, disputes, affiliate commissions, currency conversion, payout fees, and your business costs. They are neither profit nor guaranteed bank deposits.
Do not pay monthly on a sales forecast
Using Payhip's published percentages, Free versus Plus breaks even at roughly $966.67 in monthly sales subject to its platform fee: $29 ÷ 3%. Plus versus Pro breaks even at $3,500: the extra $70 ÷ 2%.
Below the first threshold, Free costs less. Above it, Plus can make sense; Pro beats Plus only above the second threshold. This fee-only model assumes the same processor and excludes taxes and other charges. Use actual recurring sales, not an optimistic launch target, before adding a subscription. Payhip billing guide
Tax coverage needs a current comparison
Gumroad acts as merchant of record for resales and takes responsibility for applicable indirect-tax collection and remittance under its terms. That does not remove your income-tax responsibilities. Its terms explicitly leave reporting your earnings and paying the correct direct tax with you. Gumroad terms sections 10.2 and 10.6
Payhip handles digital EU/UK VAT as reseller by default. It also began handling US sales tax and Canadian GST/HST/PST on July 1, 2026, as a US marketplace facilitator and Canadian digital platform operator. An older comparison saying “EU/UK VAT only” is now incomplete. Payhip tax coverage, US sales tax, Canada sales tax
Important boundaries remain: Payhip's Canada guide leaves QST to sellers where required and calls for a jointly signed GST506 form if already GST-registered. Its US guide warns that some physical-presence sellers may still need state filings. For other taxes, its custom-tax tools can collect money for you to report and remit; collection is not the same as remittance.
Choose based on the documented coverage for your situation, not a blanket “taxes handled” claim. This is a platform comparison, not individualized tax or legal advice.
Confirm you can receive the money
Gumroad's payout route depends on country. Its standard scheduled payout minimum is $100, with higher minimums in some countries and a minimum seven-day sales hold on weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedules. Account review can delay the first payout; instant payouts are not a universal new-seller workaround. Check the supported country, currency, identity requirements, and payout fees before listing. Getting paid by Gumroad
Payhip credits the connected processor when a purchase happens. That does not mean instant arrival in your bank: bank settlement follows that processor's schedule and requirements. If you cannot qualify for a supported gateway, its lower platform fee is irrelevant. Payhip payment and payout guidance
Keep the first setup easy to leave
Both platforms support customer sales exports. Keep original files, product copy, order records, and consent preferences independently. A CSV is not a complete replacement storefront. Before switching, plan how existing buyers will retain downloads and how you will update checkout links, integrations, and support instructions. Gumroad does not support importing customers or subscribers, so a move there has a specific limitation. Gumroad sales export, Payhip customer export, Gumroad import limits
Before choosing: verify payout eligibility, check content and file rules, and calculate fees at your real price. Do not launch until your product and payout route qualify. Test delivery without paying yourself: Gumroad offers a logged-in test-card flow; Payhip supports a 100%-off coupon. Neither unpaid test proves bank settlement. Start with one product and no monthly commitment. Gumroad testing, Payhip testing
